Letting agent’s competition offers early access and cash

By Isla Mustin

Student Cribs, the UK’s leading private student accommodation provider, currently manages 38 properties in Durham. As of the 6th October, Student Cribs released the list of properties for students signed up to their mailing lists, offering them ‘exclusive access’ to the accommodations.

For another year, Student Cribs have had their yearly ‘Rent Release Competition’, in which students can ‘win up to £1500 cash’ and ‘get early access to 2025/26 rents’. By sharing a unique code and having others sign up for early release of the properties, students can climb the ‘leaderboard’ to increase their chances of winning. This incentive scheme encourages students to book viewings and secure properties early into the Michaelmas term.

In addition to this, Student Cribs has been actively calling students who’ve signed up and encouraged sign-ups to the early access scheme by giving out free coffee outside the Student Union.

Of these 38 properties available, only one was priced below £200 per person per week. 23 of these properties were priced between £214 and £229 per week, and 12 properties don’t include electricity in the weekly price.

In comparison, other local estate agents, such as Robinsons, had an average property price of £158.79 as of September 2024, while Frampton and Roebuck offered properties with an average house price of £112.88, excluding bills.

The early release of these properties, along with competitive pricing, reflects the high demand for student housing in Durham, prompting students to secure accommodation quickly to ensure availability for the next academic year.

Palatinate contacted Student Cribs for comment but did not receive a response.
