Diversity and Days: two poems by Emerson Shams and Hugo Bush
Diversity
Diversity.
What is it?
A word we use to positively refer to our differences?
Or a word we use to try and mask that we have been othered.
Being mixed:
Gay
Trans
Arab
White
Muslim
Christian
American
Egyptian
Biological female is who I am.
These are my identities, not my labels.
But above all: I am human, I am me.
I am not other.
I am not diverse.
Days
By Hugo Bush
Days.
Long Days.
Ever long.
Ever Longer.
Days ceaselessly are.
And are and are and are.
Even if the hours are few,
The stream of days never ceases.
Yes, days are long and ever longer.
But, just as days tick on, so, friend, can you.
