What’s On?: Live music events in February

DECIBEL: A Night of Fresh Sounds

What?  A charity concert featuring three upcoming artists

Where?  Durham Students’ Union

When?  7pm, Sunday 25th February

How much? Advance tickets are £8 (£6 for COCO Society members) and can be purchased from FIXR

Headlining the night are Liverpool-based indie-pop group Motherhood, with support from Durham’s own “premiere cover band” Lost Degree, and solo artist Jordan Sheath. This event is to raise money for the Newcastle-based charity COCO, which aims to provide sustainable sources of education in East Africa.

‘NotOnMyCampus’ Open Mic Night

What?  Open Mic fundraiser

Where?  The Library Bar

When?  7pm, Sunday 11th February

How much?  The event is free to attend, but donations are encouraged

“It Happens Here” Durham, Durham Intersectional Feminism Society and “It’s Not OK at Durham” campaign are hosting an open mic night to raise funds for RSACC (Rape and Sexual Abuse Counselling Centre), Be Trans Support & Development North. Expect an evening of music, poetry, and spoken word – anyone is welcome to turn up and perform on the night!

The Invitations

What?  A selection of covers to fit a variety of genres

Where?  Fabio’s Bar

When?  9pm, Friday 16th February

How much?  Free entry

The Invitations are a versatile four-piece band made up of Durham students. They will be performing a selection of classic funk, soul and pop covers live at Fabio’s on Friday 16th February.

Jazz Sessions Extra: Zoë Gilby Duo

What?  An evening of jazz

Where?  Empty Shop HQ

When?  7pm, Thursday 15th February

How much?  £5/ £4 for students OTD

Vocalist Zoë Gilby will be performing original compositions at Empty Shop HQ with her double bassist husband Andy Champion. Their music is influenced by the likes of Sheila Jordan and Joni Mitchell, as well as a wide range of contemporary material, from Pink Floyd, to Kate Bush.

ZEPHYR & Chris Noade with Wildcard

What?  R&B and Funk

Where?  Fabio’s Bar

When?  9:30pm, Wednesday 21st February

How much?  Free entry

R&B artists ZEPHYR & Chris Noade will be performing at Fabio’s, with support from live funk band Wildcard. The event will be opened by DJ Tom Wright, before the main acts take to the stage, performing an eclectic mix of covers and originals.

Normanton Street @ Jam Jah

What?  Soul/Hip-Hop

When?  9pm, Friday 23rd February

Where?  Alington House Community Centre

How much?  £5 OTD

Four-piece Brighton-based band Normanton Street will be returning to Jam Jah on Friday 23rd February. Their sound consists of three distinct vocals, jazz-influenced guitars and saxophone melodies. Their set will be followed by a selection of DJs playing a wide range of musical genres from around the globe!
