Police are investigating after three men entered an underground car park in Elvet Riverside early on Thursday morning, lighting a fire under the building.

The fire spread to a large wheelie bin, which was destroyed. No damage was recorded to the building, and no injuries were sustained.

It is understood that University security has been ramped up in refuse sites and other risk areas in response.

Durham Constabulary told Palatinate that the fire service arrived at the scene and alerted the police to a “suspected arson incident” at Durham University premises in Elvet Riverside.

The building houses the University’s Language Centre, the Modern Languages and Cultures department, and the lectures and seminars of several other subjects. Societies and theatre groups often hold events and rehearsals at the venue.

Police have asked anyone with information about the incident to ring Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident 0048 of April 15.
