AI’s capabilities in the critical field of cancer research have highlighted how its detecting and diagnosing skills display ground-breaking potential. In cancer diagnosis procedures, AI transcends the limits of the human eye, enabling us to detect and analyse information with unprecedented precision. Exemplifying this point, doctors at the Massachusetts General Hospital have engineered an AI programme called Sybil. Remarkably, this software can predict 94% of the time whether a person is going to develop lung cancer within the next year. Such technology has the ability to outperform even the most skilled radiologists who frequently miss early-stage lung cancer when symptoms are not yet discernible to the human eye. Where non-communicable diseases such as lung cancer are responsible for 70% of global deaths, the use of AI has the potential to save millions of lives. The integration of AI holds promise for revolutionising diagnosis, drug development, and patient outcomes, suggesting a transformative era in healthcare.

Despite these notable strengths, it’s hard to assert categorically that AI surpasses human assistance in all respects. AI still faces significant challenges and has a long way to come. While the benefits of AI in the medical sphere are superfluous, one must consider the effect this technology has on the interpersonal role healthcare plays in wider society. Through the study of the elderly, a group in society that relies greatly on their doctors not only for medical assurance but also for conversation and basic human kindness, the prospect of automated healthcare may pose great challenges. Hence, the question arises whether in an age where the prevalence of social media has already greatly reduced the need for in-person human interaction, do we want to allow technology to assimilate into daily lives when it only serves to manufacture an even more detached society than the one we are currently in. This begs the questions as to whether there is still an unparalleled importance to the role of humans in societies medical care. What’s more, would the general public even feel comfortable with AI controlled medical care? Apprehension surrounding data privacy is already a big issue for the case of AI in hospitals. In May 2023, the US-based centre for AI Safety circulated a statement warning of AI’s ability to take over humanity, and with it spread misinformation and lies. Coincidentally, during that same month, Geoffrey Hinton quit his job at google, citing his concerns about AI’s capacity to exert dominion over humanity. From such incidences, it could be speculated that the fear surrounding AI  healthcare could even deter people from seeking help, just as it deterred its very creators.

As AI continues to evolve, it is clear that there are factors slowing it in its tracks. From this report, the strengths and weaknesses of AI have been deliberated, concluding that finding the right balance between AI’s rapid integration and human expertise will be crucial in unlocking its full potential within healthcare. Where AI seeks dominion over healthcare services, issues of privacy and conviviality in medical care may be threatened. Hence, for AI to become effectively embedded into modern medical practice and to exhibit its very real strengths in that regard, as this article has shown, it is a relationship in which AI must always play a subservient role to human assistance. Achieving this will ensure both trust in medical services and the continuation of basic human kindness within healthcare.
