Proposed variation to Maiden Castle Premises License

By Ivan Deverick

Durham University has applied to the County Council for a variation to their Maiden Castle Premises License.

The proposal could affect how the Café and Clubroom, Maiden Castle’s bar, distributes alcohol. This could allow for an extension to the licensable area and changes to times for the sale of alcohol, which would be allowed on and off the premises between 11AM to midnight on any day of the week except Sunday which would be midday to 11PM.

Indoor sporting events could be given extended times between Monday to Saturday from 8AM to midnight on any day of the week except Sunday, where they would only be permitted up to 11PM.

The variation on the license could allow entertainment events, including plays, films, live and recorded music, and dance performances, to be hosted. These would all be required to finish by midnight every day of the week except Sunday, where events would finish at 11PM.

The deadline to submit representations passed on 3rd June, after which point the County Council will decide on whether to accept the application.

A spokesperson for Durham University said: “This application seeks to extend the times and locations at which high-quality student events could be held at the Maiden Castle site. “All events are run responsibly, within reasonable operating hours.”
