Durham County Council has been given approval to demolish the current Durham Bus station, situated on North Road, and build a new bus station on the same site.
The demolition of the current bus station is scheduled for early 2021, with the new building due to be operational by September 2022.
The overhaul aims to create “a modern and spacious hub” with a more “light and airy setting”. Toilet and baby changing facilities will be improved and there will be more available passenger seating.
To improve visibility for bus drivers when entering and exiting the station, the reversing area will be extended.
Durham County Council hopes the investment will speed the economic recovery in the city and local area, which both face a recession due to the pandemic.
