Palatinate won two awards at the Student Publication Association awards in Cardiff on Saturday, including Best Publication.

The judges praised Palatinate’s “hard-hitting exclusive news stories” and “series of high profile interviews”.

Previous News Editor Tania Chakraborti won the Best Reporter award, with previous Editor-in-chief Eugene Smith noted as Highly Commended.

The awards were held at the SPA national conference, a weekend celebrating the best of student journalism across the UK.

Chakraborti said “It was a shock and surprise and I’m so grateful to the SPAs for the award. I’m also so thrilled that Palatinate has been recognised as Best Publication.

“Every single person on the paper works so hard to produce the content we put out there, and it’s a testament to the entire team of editors and contributors.”

Palatinate was shortlisted for 11 awards in total, in categories ranging from ‘Best Entertainment Piece’ to ‘Best Sports Coverage’.

In her acceptance speech, current Editor-in-chief Sophie Gregory thanked the “hundreds of people at Durham” who help to make the paper a success.
