Mind Over Mileage’: Ruth Wilson’s charitable challenge from Durham-to-London for mental health.
By Milly Moore
Vice Principle of Durham’s John Snow College, Ruth Wilson, is set to undergo a fundraising 7 multi-day run, walk and cycle from Durham to London.
The challenge will take place in April 2026, with the final day consisting of Ruth completing the London Marathon. Ruth, a long-time mental heath advocate, has the Goal of raising an additional £38,000 to hit the grand sum of £100,000 for Mind, the mental health charity.
Her fundraising challenge began in 2022 with her mission: “the £40K challenge Before 40”. Inspired by the loss of her cousin Ged to suicide in 2018, Ruth decided to turn grief into action by raising awareness and funds for better mental health support.Ruth Wilson shared: “my 40th birthday loomed large, and I realised Ged would never turn 40 with me. So instead of staying sad, I set about creating hope through action. This challenge is about making sure someone else gets their tomorrow.”
Over those three years Ruth completed a series of endurance and community events including: skydives, marathons and open-water swims, just to name a few of her ventures. All inspired by her mantra “Hope Through Action.” These resulted in her celebrating her 40th birthday in May 2025 having raised over £62,000, exceeding her target of £40,000.

Mind is the leading mental health charity in England and Wales. They provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing mental health problems.
Ruth’s journey can be followed via her social media account “Mind over mileage.” Money raised goes directly to Mind, helping provide mental health services and support. This includes services such as the Mind Infoline, the legal line, and online peer support communities for adults.
