Ex-Durham trio chosen for Varsity clash

by

Three former DURFC players, two of whom were part of last season’s remarkable BUCS triumph at Twickenham, will line up for Cambridge University in next-week’s hotly-anticipated Varsity fixture.

Rob Malaney – last-year’s captain of the all-conquering Palatinates – will start at openside flanker, while full-back Tom O’Toole and winger Paul Loudon complete the Durham connection.

The historic fixture, which dates back to 1872, will be played at Twickenham on Thursday, 8 December, with Cambridge looking to avenge last year’s 22-10 defeat.

It is a second appearance at the home of English rugby in 2011 for Malaney and O’Toole, who will be hoping for a repeat of Durham’s stunning victory over UWIC in April, only this time in the light blue of Cambridge.

After 128 contests, Oxford have 54 wins but Cambridge lead the way with 60, with 14 ending in draws.

The game (14:00 kick off) will be shown live on Sky Sports, and has again attracted thousands of fans.

  • A better piece of journalism would have highlighted the fact that it is the second year in a row where three durham alumni will be starting in the Varsity Match
