A magistrate has banned a Durham University student from driving after being found guilty of drink-driving offences.

On the 31 May Laura Carmichael, 22, was involved in a crash on Renny’s Lane near the Gilesgate area of Durham city at 3am.

Miss Carmichael, originally from North Duffield near Selby, North Yorkshire, was breathalysed at the scene by police and found to be more than twice the legal limit.

Appearing before Newton Aycliffe Magistrates Court, she pleaded guilty to the drink-driving charge.

On the night of the collision, Miss Carmichael attended a nightclub and then a house party with friends, the court heard, before driving her car. She had thought herself to be under the limit for driving her vehicle safely.

It was said that the crash was caused in part by large patches of condensation on the car windscreen, impairing vision of the road.

In addition to a driving ban for a 20-month term, the magistrate also fined her £120 and ordered a payment of £85 in costs and a £30 victim surcharge.
