Durham breaks BUCS record with unprecedented Michaelmas performance

Team Durham celebrated a record-breaking Michaelmas term, earning the highest number of points of all time achieved by any University by the Christmas break.

The 1996 league points earned place Durham 130 points ahead of rival Loughborough and are indicative of Durham University’s most successful ever sporting term.

No university won such a number of points in the entirety of the last academic year. Of the 28 Northern Premier League divisions in which Team Durham sides compete, Durham sit top of nine of them – ahead of Loughborough (6) and Leeds Beckett (3).

Added to these successes, a further six Team Durham sides top their respective British University Leagues, meaning that Team Durham lead 34 different leagues. In addition, the Palatinates sit second in three divisions and third in five others.

In cup competitions, only Nottingham who sit third in the overall table, have claimed more points than the Palatinates.

Despite this, such is Loughborough’s strength in individual sport, Durham’s great sporting rival leads the race by under 300 points as Wednesdays prepare to resume in late January.
