The City of Durham MP, Mary Kelly Foy, has announced that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in February. Fortunately, the NHS diagnosed the cancer early; she states that she “should make a full recovery”.

Posted last Friday on X, formerly Twitter, she wrote, “I had surgery yesterday so, as you can imagine, I will need to spend a short spell of time at home to recuperate.

“Even though I will not be in Parliament during this time, my work as MP will continue and my dedicated teams in Durham and Westminster remain on hand to support constituents.”

Ms Foy encouraged women to attend the NHS Breast Screening programme

Ms Foy is 56 years old and was elected as City of Durham MP in the 2019 general election as a member of the Labour Party.

Ms Foy encouraged women to attend the NHS Breast Screening programme, “it could really save your life!”. 1 in 7 women in the UK are shown to be diagnosed with Breast Cancer in their lifetime; 8 out of 10 of these cases are diagnosed in women aged 50 and over.

She has received lots of support from constituents and MPs. Emily Thornberry, Shadow Attorney General, stated, “Love and Hugs Mary. Get well soon”.
