An historic victory for the radical left Syriza bloc in Greece’s general election on Sunday has prompted fears from EU leaders of a default on the bailout debt and the possibility of a ‘Grexit’ from the Eurozone. Alexis Tsipras, the new Prime Minister, has promised to reverse austerity measures as a result of the conditions of the joint EU-IMF €240bn bailout package, provisions he has dubbed as “fiscal waterboarding”. The Syriza leader has declared his intention to write-off large portions of the debt, much to the dismay of European leaders.
