I am saddned and feel bereaved by the passing of my good friend Matty, who was editor of Palatinate during the year I was away in Glasgow and Germany. He was a splendid and valuable colleague,m who worked hard on his English (he could have done a Ph D had he wanted) but devoted more time to the good things of undergraduate life. His room in Abbey House was a haven for friends, to whom Matty’;s warm welcome was always extended. The Castle and all other students who knew himn well in his years at Durham will be left saddened and diminished by his loss. He will be in my thoughts and prayers in the coming days.
